Our journey began with some experiments using GoPro cameras and tripods to record surgery room procedures. It worked, but the equipment required considerable floor space, a bit awkward to get the right camera angles, and considerable editing to produce the final videos.
These experiments showed promise so we set about developing the first generation HALO system where the cameras were placed on the fluoroscope head and the processing equipment was consolidated into a procedure room cart. The system worked well but we discovered that the frequent rotation of the fluoroscope head led to camera views of the ceiling and walls thus significant recording view loss. Further, the sheer volume of procedure videos dramatically increased the labor required for post-processing thus an inability to scale.
Given these lessons and not to be deterred, we moved forward with the development of a 2nd generation and current system. This design eliminated fluoroscope mounted cameras, equipment cart, and completely automated. all post-procedure processing. We also stepped up to five (5) state-of-the-art commercial PTZ cameras mounted in the ceiling which gave us the same procedure view as the doctor but with much greater clarity, and undisturbed by fluoroscope movement.
This solution was conceived and designed based on our editing experience of well over 5,000 procedure videos with our 1st generation system. This new design took into consideration the issues, views and data related to;
The 2nd generation HALO system is now successfully installed and running in multiple Customer sites, who can attest to its ease of use, reliability, and technical innovation.
